The Sinai campaign
Sand in the Apricot is a WW1 centenary commemorative project on the NZ Mounted Rifles who served in the Middle East campaign of the First World War.
My grandfather served with the NZ Mounted Rifles in WW1 and was the inspiration behind telling the story of this lesser known campaign. Sand in the Apricot Jam toured New Zealand from 2014 – 2018 during the centenary period. It was also exhibited in Rishon Le Zion, Israel during the WW1 centenary commemorations there.
The name for the exhibition came from my grandfather’s dislike for apricot jam. The solders were given apricot jam in their rations and would invariably get sand in it while out in the field. The name locates the subject of the artwork to this particular campaign in the war.
